Fourth-grade students at Explorer Elementary visited Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. The out of school learning experience supported the District's K-12 STEAM initiative.
Students learning was enriched in the subjects of art, science, and social studies. Art integration was supported as students engaged with various exhibits including the sculpture park, Japanese garden, and the indoor rotating exhibit. Social Studies standards were addressed during the visit to the rock quarry, Great Lakes elevated water simulation and historically accurate time period exhibits. Science standards were infused throughout the visit during activities at the horticulture gardens, butterfly exhibit, and wetland trails.
Transportation costs for the trip were generously covered by the elementary PTSA.
