Willy the Hornet Wins Logo Competition
Williamston won the Lansing State Journal Best High School Logo competition. The best logo poll included multiple rounds of public voting throughout the month of September. Willy accumulated almost 16,000 votes in the final round vs. Portland. Williamston defeated Okemos in the Semi-Finals and Mason in the Quarter-Finals.
Retired Williamston High School Teacher and Historian Mitch Lutzke detailed the origins of Williamston's logo in his book "Stories from Williamston's Past." Lutzke noted the first recorded mention of Williamston's green-and-white color scheme was in 1937. He also writes that the Hornet comes from a story about a swarm of hornets students discovered in a shed they had been tasked to paint green. The Enterprise newspaper referred to the "Williamston Hornets" athletic teams as early as 1933 (pg. 198).
The Hornet logo has gone through several different iterations over the decades. The current version was designed by WHS graduate Aaron Nilsson in 2000 after a request by the Board of Education. The "Block W" was updated in 2016. Both the WCS Hornet and Block W were trademarked in 2017.
Go Hornets!
