Willy the Hornet Mural

Discovery and Explorer elementary students collaborated on the construction of a Willy the Hornet mural. The project took three years to complete. It consists of hundreds of small Williamston-themed images illustrated in permanent marker. The mural is on display in the Discovery Elementary cafeteria.

The mural was started in January 2020 with the goal of allowing all students the opportunity to create a large piece of artwork together.  Students in Young Fives through 5th grade had the chance to create their original design on a 3x3 piece of paper using only permanent markers for the design/color. Once the squares were complete, they were glued down in such a manner that it created a pixelated image of Willy. Students reviewed and used line, shape, and contrast while designing their pieces.

With the onset of Covid-19, the project was delayed until its completion in August of 2023. A special thanks to visual arts educator Angela Herek for her vision and dedication to this unique learning opportunity for Williamston students.
