WCS Earns School Resource Officer Grant

Williamston Community Schools was selected as a recipient of the 2023 School Resource Officer (SRO) Grant. The grant was awarded by the Michigan State Police. The grant will provide for a formalized SRO program in support of student and staff safety. 

The grant application was selected by a panel of education and law enforcement representatives. In total, WCS will receive $81,900 over the grant period to invest in a collaboration with the Williamston Police Department.

School Resource Officers will:

  • Assist school administration in ensuring the physical safety of school buildings within the district and the individuals inside the school buildings.

  • Work with school administration to develop and/or update safety procedures (e.g. emergency operations plan) for potential threats in school buildings.

  • Welcome, counsel, and mentor students as advisors and role models.

  • Educate students about law-related topics, as appropriate.

  • De-escalate aggression that occurs between students or between students and district staff

Per the requirements of the grant, SROs will not be involved with enforcing school discipline.
