WMS Students Participate in Food Composting Pilot Program

Williamston Middle School students engaged with community partners on a pilot program investigating how to separate organic from inorganic waste during school lunches. The experience was part of Earth Day programming at the building.

A group of area volunteers who are part of a Food to Composting Continuum Study Group (F-C), worked with WMS on Earth Day to separate organic from inorganic waste after lunch.   It was a pilot exercise for the purpose of keeping food scraps out of landfills and contributing to healthier soils.

Hammond Farms, which provides organic waste pickup services through their My Green Michigan service, was on hand to display photos and illustrations of the composting operation and the rich soil that results.  F-C's goals are also to recapture food where possible and educational outreach. Contact F-C at LaffertyPLLC@gmail.com if you'd like to know more about the program or volunteer opportunities.
