Special Education

Williamston Community Schools is committed to partnering with families to ensure that every student has the support they need to learn. The special education eligibility process begins when a parent or educator requests a comprehensive evaluation to better understand a child’s skills and needs in comparison with those of same-aged peers.

If the evaluation indicates that a child meets the eligibility criteria for special education services, a team of educators and the child’s parents work collaboratively to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP is designed to identify the student’s unique needs, establish appropriate goals and supports, and provide meaningful programming to ensure the child makes progress.

Throughout this process, our goal is to address each child’s individual needs while ensuring access to the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Whenever appropriate, students are educated alongside their same-aged peers and provided with the support and services they need to participate and succeed in the general education environment.

If you have concerns about your child’s skills and how they may be impacting learning, please email your child’s teacher, the building principal, or director of special education and provide details about your concerns.
